Summary:
While it used to look like our World Leaders took
Climate Change seriously, the latest developments have seen a lack of
real commitment. Rising Tide is a movement that is helping to raise
awareness of the issues and the action needed to keep the focus to reduce
Greenhouse gas emissions.
Background and
latest news:
The IPCC has already predicted that global temperatures will rise over
this century by 1.4-5.8°C, much higher than suggested previously.
Kyoto, December 1997, developed countries agreed
to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to 5.2% below 1990 levels over
the period 2008-2012. Most governments have completely failed to reach
even these minimal targets.
COP 6 - November 2000 six thousand people from
over forty countries attended the Friends of the Earth Dyke Building
Action; a massive PR exercise funded by the Dutch government, presenting
the worlds media and COP 6 delegates with a clear message - the climate
is fucked, do something!

Positive
Action -
"Tragically we know that COP6 was a total failure".
(Friends of the Earth; Brussels, Jan 30th 2001).
Whilst NGO's pulled off massive PR campaigns European
activists joined together in a series of disparate actions drawing attention
to the causes of climate change; the neo-liberal corporate agenda. Unlike
the NGO's these critical voices were not permitted and went largely
unreported by the worlds' media.
Faced with government inaction it is up to us to
make a change.
"The struggle for world climate change is
far from being over."
