consume.net

ConsumeX now has five WLAN routers each interconnected by 2.4ghz radios. It distributes local information and internet access to each location with great potential for additional node propogation.

ConsumeX1 - deckspace : rooftop studio in Greenwich. shares 2mbs ADSL with X
ConsumeX2 - APT : Education room and several artists regularly use the wireless network from their studios
ConsumeX3 - Use Yer Loaf : Independant Social Centre - currently offline for upgrade.
ConsumeX4 - Universal Tyres : collaborative housing project of 80 persons+ 60% can connect.. 10 regularly do.
ConsumeX5 - CBN : 40% of the Artist Studio can connect to the Access Point here.

Each node consists of a Pentium PC running Unix router software and housing the wireless network adapter (a radio version of standard Ethernet adapter). The radio signals are transmitted via rooftop antennas that provide omnidiractional coverage. The router presents an open point of access for conventional wired and wireless computer use. It handles these trafiic between the nodes and carries the users network requests and returns the response at high speed.

The installation at each location is the product of a careful and collaborative process with its host and represents many hours of work for all involved. As a result we have built good relationships with these partners with whom we continue to work and develop the network. For many involved X came early in their exposure to community networking and in some cases computers.. but as time rolls on the understanding and appreciation of our initiatve grows.

Many additional node locations have been investigated in the 2 years of opperation and we are hopeful others will join the network this year as we begin the next phase of community broadband betwork building in SE8
