The area is a rich mix of community, cultual centres and educational institutions, with deep a historical heritage, diverse population and at the apex of great transformation and regeneration for better or worse.
The character and identity of the area is at stake, as we strive to progress the continuity of community hangs in the balance. 'development is fine but who draws the line'.. To a great extent, the decisions determining how when and where regeneration will occur have been made and acted on. Transport, culture and educational interests have been emphasised in an effort to accelerate the regenerative process. As a result property values has risen, indiginous residents face increasing rents and public space is changing fast. Many of those involved in the provision of public service, entertainment and environment have a commitment to extending contempory facilities and improving access to communications, information and resources. Not least of these is the national push for broadband networks and internet access for all. The who, what and where detail of these proposals is the subject of our research and already the object of much funding support locally as it is Uk wide. A report into these issues was commisioned in 2002 by BNDG - Broadband Network Delivery Group, and is now complete following two years of research. Meanwhile many arts organisations, housing coop initiatives, small business, crossriver partners as well as local residents continue to express interest in extending 'X' and now drive the process of network establishment and interconnection. All constituants of Deptford, Lewisham and New Cross areas of South London are invited to engage in the collaborative process now underway, so in you are interested please get in touch.. make@spc.org |
